Former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao contributed a $1,000 to the 2014 re-election campaign of scorned Jefferson County District Court Judge Sandra McLaughlin, according to KREF reports. Chao's contribution came almost six months after McLaughlin was recorded telling an African American defendant that his Obama t-shirt "wasn't helping" his case. After dismissing the defendant from her courtroom, McLaughlin remarked, he was "he was lucky to get out of here alive."

According to KREF records, Chao's contribution to McLaughlin appears to be the only one made by the former Secretary to a Kentucky candidate for non-federal office since 2003, when Governor Ernie Fletcher reported a $270 in-kind contribution from her.  (Fun fact: Three years later Fletcher would be indicted on unrelated charges of conspiracy, official misconduct, and political discrimination.)

Me contacting Chao for comment
McLaughlin was featured in a July 2014 report by Zoe Schaver with the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting (KYCIR) titled A Look at Louisville’s Worst-Rated Judge and Her Controversial Comments. Wonkette took the KYCIR story viral a few days later with the headline This Kentucky Lady Judge Is Our Current Top Contender For Worst Judge.

According to KYCIR, members of the Louisville Bar Association recently rated McLaughlin their least favorite district court judge. In fact, she received the lowest rating of any district court judge since the Association began surveying its members in 1979.

Incidentally, Chao is married to Sen. Mitch McConnell, who practiced law in Louisville up until 1978. What compelled Chao to contribute to McClaughlin's re-election campaign remains a mystery.

  1. I noticed that Elaine used the wrong address (23180 Dundoe Road Louisville, Kentucky 40205) on her $1,000 contribution. The address Mitch McConnell uses is 2318 Dundee Road Louisville, Kentucky 40205.
Maybe it’s because she really lives in Washington, D.C.
