Does grass grow in the shade? - Tolling Authority meets Thursday

Just noticed this new pic up on the Ohio River Bridges Project website, and according to the Project hacks, grass DOES INDEED GROW in the shade. Is it just me, or is the proposed downtown bridge looking even more disgusting than we had ever imagined it?

So there's a public Tolling Authority meeting coming up this Thursday, December 2nd. Specifically:

Finance and Construction Committee Meeting
Date: December 2, 2010
Time:  10 a.m.-12 noon
Location:  Kye’s I – Banquet Room
500 Missouri Ave.
Jeffersonville, IN 47130

Hope to see you all there!

Indiana businesses saying NO to tolls

Despite what bullshit you might have heard Jerry Abramson on the radio this morning-people are not cool with tolls on existing bridges no matter how itsy-bity they are portrayed as. Here some reporting from a meeting last night of the newly organized No 2 Bridge Tolls:

Governments shouldn't be about secrets. It's time we stop hunting Julian Assange and instead stop doing secretive things that are wrong.

Say NO to Bridge TOLLS petitioning Federal Government

Say NO to Bridge TOLLS is petitioning Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood to acknowledge that the citizens within the Louisville region do not want tolls on Ohio River bridges, or on the Spaghetti Junction intersection of I-65, I-64, and I-71, in spite of what he may be hearing from the Tolling Authority's upcoming financing plan.

Say NO to Bridge TOLLS has reached their goal of collecting over 10,000 signatures on their "No Tolls Petition" before the end of the year. The group has also obtained signatures of 210 businesses owners that have signed the Businesses Against Tolls Petition.

On Monday, November 22, 2010, Say NO to Bridge TOLLS is mailing to Secretary Lahood the "No Tolls" Petitions, totaling 10,328 signatures, along with the signatures of 210 business owners, and copies of the eight "No Tolls Resolutions" that have passed in the following municipalities and governments: Louisville Metro Council, New Albany City Council, Jeffersonville City Council, Clark County Commissioners , Clarksville Town Council, Sellersburg Town Council, Clark County Council and the Utica Town Board. These eight governmental entities represent roughly 1 million people that will be most affected by the Ohio River Bridges Project, and the working people that stand to suffer the most by the burden of the threatened tolls.

Shawn Reilly speaking at Tolling Authority Mtg
"We are are sending a clear message to the Federal Government, by providing all of these No Tolls resolutions and over 10,000 petition signatures, that our community will not stand for tolls on our bridges. Few of our political leaders are standing up for the citizens of this community so we hope that Secretary LaHood will do the right thing and stop the Tolling Authority from making an epic mistake that threatens to cause our community years of hardship." said Shawn Reilly, co-founder of Say NO to Bridge TOLLS.

Say NO to Bridge TOLLS is a broad based community group representing tens of thousands of people across Indiana and Kentucky that are opposed to any tolls being placed on existing or new bridges, or the Spaghetti Junction, to pay for the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Louisville: Let's tear down 64

In a few weeks, on December 16, 2010- The Louisville Tolling Authority, they call themselves the Bridges Authority, plans to vote on a tolling scenario to finance the Ohio River Bridges Project. A Project I love and hate. The East End bridge needs to be built- but more downtown expressway lanes? I don't think so. Check this out:

Also-if one of my gentle readers knows how I can fix my settings so embedded videos aren't cropped, please let me know via comment before I literally cut off my fingers.

The Future of Food - On HULU

Remember hearing about this new movie by Deborah Koons Garciaon genetically-engineered food?
Here's an interview with her talking about the movie:

Well-I just saw the movie, and was blown away. It's on HULU. Go watch it now:

Also, if you want to see the agri-corporate industry attempt to defend themselves, check them out:
I thought their attempts at defense are really lame- what do you think?

I'm setting on a 4-legged stool watching this...thinking...why? Why don't I have a job when idiots were paid to put this shit together?

See today's LEO Weekly to discover that the producers of this video & the Bridges Coalition are refusing to make public how much it costs. Kind of screw up the whole "oh, we're just a wholesome little grassroots effort" when they are neglecting the principle of transparency.

They'll be including Louisville in their nationwide tour to collect LGBT-stories. Thursday, November 18th, they'll be dropping in on Teddy Bears, 1148 Garvin Place, sometime between 6 pm -10 pm (working on getting that time narrowed down.)

Go to here to find out more. Hope to see you there!

UPDATE, 10/16/2010, 11:16 pm:

No Teddy Bears. Looks like they're detouring to Lexington. Somebody said that place has a gay mayor.

Prediction: Why Daniels/Palin ticket will win in 2012

Disclosure: I'm not advocating this scenario. Rather, I'm ringing the warning bell.

Fact) Sarah Palin is popular in red states. (Ask my mom.)

Fact) Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels and his moving Indiana "at the speed of business" appeals to nearly all Republicans on the planet that Sarah doesn't appeal to.

Fact) Governor Daniels, through his unapologetic support of privatizing Indiana roadways, which results in huge, profitable bonds for his friends at Goldman Sachs, has proven that he is willing to put the needs of corporate America before the needs of the American people. His latest gift to his future sponsors will soon be announced in December: A Ohio River Bridges Project financing plan that is focused around creating amazing profits for Goldman Sachs. (Daniels appointed 4 of the 12 members to the Louisville and Southern Indiana Bridges Authority, aka, the Tolling Authority).

Fact) Goldman Sachs has a knack for choosing who they want to to be President. And they have a history of dancing with those that brung them too.

Fact) President Obama is treating his presidency like an election campaign, while we are at war. As a result, he's created his own vulnerability. All Daniels and Palin need to do is run on a platform that incorporates withdrawing from Afghanistan, and guess what? Self-respecting liberals will close their eyes and vote for Daniels/ Palin. Because war is worse than fascism.

Seriously, President Obama: Get us out of Afghanistan RIGHT NOW, or be replaced by someone who will, no matter how much it hurts us.

On a lighter note, here's some REAL FUNNY by my friend Wil Heuser that's on topic:

More InfoAs the deadline for the Tolling Authority to produce it's financing plan rapidly approaches, we've had lots of developments that we need to put in perspective as we move forward. Among those developments:

1) Rejection of the Tolling Authority's Tiger II Grant
2) Passing of an 8th No Tolls Resolution- this one by the Clark County, Indiana Commissioners.
3) Status of Drumanard de-list appeal
4) Petition Drive Status

So let's get together and discuss: What's next?
How do we most-effectively move forward to accomplish our objective. Bring your ideas.

Transition team includes "objective, non-political people"

Press release on the Fischer transition team below.

My loyal readers, both of them, will remember that Fischer referred to Mayor Abramson's Tolling Authority appointees as "objective, non-political people" just 26 days ago, and now he appoints half of those Authority appointees to his transition team. Nice. Here's the clip from the WHAS debate:
So if Ben Richmond and Charlie Moyer are objective, non-political people, I must be a Smurf. Because I said it's so, must make it true.

LEO Weekly is here!

Well, at least it supposed to be. I guess we can check it out online until the real thing makes it in the boxes.

Steve Shaw has a very accurate update on the Bridges Project. I did take issue with one sentence, but I put that in the comments on their site. Also, I regret that he left out Kerry Stemler's proposal at the last Tolling Authority meeting that the Project be separated into two projects for the financing side. So that, for example, JP Chase could own one bridge and Goldman Sachs could own the other.

Also, Jonathan Meador said a lot of true stuff about the Yum! Arena that makes James Ramsey look like a fool.

Ironically, it was at Ramsey's University of Louisville where I first learned about how Arenas DO NOT drive urban economic development. Yeah, there's been studies. That's just a myth spun by old white guys that are masters at subverting the public will. Glad I got educated.

Breaking details on the Compton murder

Suspect arrested in Andrew Compton murder

Murder arrest in case of a missing Sullivan student-wave3

The missing person report was made October 30, and yet the warrant to search Greg O'Bryan's premises was granted on November 9. Why would it take 10 days to get the warrant if it was the last place he had been seen?

This should not have taken 10 days.  It's amazing the guy didn't skip town.

November 7, 2010

Where is Andrew Compton?

After a few days, I thought, ah, this kid is probably just crashed on a couch somewhere. But it's been 10 days.  Ugh. If you know anything about this kids whereabouts- clue the LMPD and probably his parents too because, I'll say it, the LMPD is incompetent. The last time we had a missing person scare in our midst I found myself on the phone with them "explaining Facebook" because they were blocked from seeing the site. Finally, I had to email in screen shots. But by all means, keep Chief White. (sarcasm)

Metro Louisville hates veterans in wheelchairs

While I'm grateful to live in a neighborhood that benefits from the residential garbage pickup within the Urban Services District, I must protest when the dudes leave the cans bundled together to create a barrier wall for those in wheelchairs. Get it together guys.

Louisville to go prompt critical...jkjk

SL-1 (January, 1961)
Greg Fischer is due to be sworn in as the second mayor of Metro Louisville on January 3, 2011.

This date will also be marking the 50th anniversary of the nation's first nuclear reactor accident, and the only one resulting in fatalities.

The Idaho reactor, referred to as SL-1, had been shut down for service on December 21, 1960. When it was time to start up the reactor on January 3, 1961, well, I copy/paste...
"Maintenance procedures were in process, which required the main central control rod to be manually withdrawn a few inches to reconnect it to its drive mechanism; at 9:01 p.m. this rod was suddenly withdrawn too far, causing SL-1 to go prompt critical instantly. In four milliseconds, the heat generated by the resulting enormous power surge caused water surrounding the core to begin to explosively vaporize. The water vapor caused a pressure wave to strike the top of the reactor vessel.
This propelled the control rod and the entire reactor vessel upwards, which killed the operator who had been standing on top of the vessel, leaving him impaled to the ceiling by the control rod. The other two military personnel, a supervisor and a trainee, were also killed." - (Wikipedia)
I'm not saying this day- will be like that day.  I'm hoping Mr. Fischer takes the time to get in some real rest before his inauguration, so he can hit the ground running. I'm also hopeful that he heeds the "significant input" of the brightest and most compassionate of his advisers, most of whom are supporters of 8664. That would be a best practice, as he likes to say, I think anyway.

I have a lot of faith Fischer's first day will be better than the poor chap that pulled that rod out too far. Interestingly, they didn't find guy's body for several days, as no one thought to look for him...on the friggin' ceiling. He and his two co-workers are buried in Arlington, in metal vaults with concrete covers.

Jack Conway introducing President Bill Clinton

CLICK HERE to see Bill Clinton's speech that followed. It was:
1) considerably longer,
2) educational, and

Here's a little piece by WHAS 84 I just ran across: linky. It's got a unique picture that I haven't seen elsewhere because it was taken from behind the "stage". I didn't see where there was any media allowed back there. What's cool is it shows the size of the crowd, and also, I can see my little head.

The Greg Fischer & Jim King Photo Caption Contest

Snapped this little one before the Clinton rally. Don't like my caption? That's cool. Enter your own below:
Who says mutual masterbation is out of style?

Greg Fischer's speech at the Clinton Rally

Here's the complete Greg Fischer speech from the Clinton rally. Notice Greg refers to the Fairness ordinance the Non-Discrimination ordinance? WTF? Who calls it THAT? That's almost like, not voting for it.  Also, he likes the diversity of the crowd: white & black, young and old, but notice he doesn't say gay or straight. Obama says gay or straight. I'm just sayin.
As an aside- I'm concerned for Greg's health. He sounds exhausted. If you're close to this guy, which I'm obviously not, please do everything in your power to see that he gets lots of rest following tomorrow, regardless of the outcome. While I'm not voting for him, I wouldn't want him to be sick.
This means: Don't call him and bother him about stupid post-election detail stuff.

I'm not an Aqua Buddhist. I'm you!

President Bill Clinton on Jack Conway

If you're still unsure on Kentucky's Senate race, take a few moments to hear what former President Bill Clinton has to say on the subject:

Fairness Campaign: Heiner HATES rainbows, other stuff

Just got another email hit piece from the Fairness Campaign with the out of context "Life is short" video. Note: Had Democrats not resorted to out-of-context, Shirley Sherroding tactics, I wouldn't have either. Notice Republicans aren't doing them. We probably need to check ourselves.

Oh, if you've missed the attack on Heiner, here's a taste of it:
Link to Fairness campaign bullshit that could have been spent on Jack Conway instead.

Oh, I'm acknowledging that Greg Fischer campaign did put up Fairness Campaign as a supporter on their website after it hit Friday that they didn't have it up.

And a ton of Greg Fischer for Mayor signs have ended up on the windows of Connection. Surely this has nothing to do with the previously-hoped-for-non-forgivable loans that George Stinson got from Jerry Abramson's administration to install gender-neutral restrooms in his gay bar, and to open an upscale liquor store on S. 4th Street.

And if you didn't know, the 'Ville Voice is making our youtube channel busier than Kroger's before a blizzard: linky

I'm going to see Bill Clinton in a bit. I feel bad that it's too late to have his visit impact our election.

11/3/2010 Update:
It was apparently NOT too late to have his visit impact our election. FML. Hope Obama cashes that check from the Fischer family before they put on the stop payment.
